Shana Tova to you all

7 Tishri 5770 25 September 2009

Shana Tova to you all

A few thank yous are due.

Firstly to Jeff Finegold and Arnold Moscisker. As part of our move towards full membership of the United Synagogue we were required to transfer to the US the legal ownership of the house at 94 Gloucester Road, the home of Rabbi and Naomi Lerer with their family. Although a straight forward matter to attend to, transactions of this nature always involve many legal formalities. Jeff and Arnold took total care of all this on our behalf at no cost to the shul, saving us very many bucks. So if you’re thinking of moving home Jeff and Arnold can attend to the conveyance for you, but of course there will be a fee to pay! Secondly, on behalf of our male members, thank you to the family who kindly donated thirty new tallitot.

Over the past few weeks you may have seen adverts, posters, business cards and postcards in the press and local shops for this year's Kol Nidre Appeal. The funds raised will be going to help our own shul, UJIA young people and education projects both here and in Israel, University Jewish Chaplaincy and Tribe. This is the first time the United Synagogue has organized the administration and collection of the Kol Nidre Appeal following on from the excellent work of the UJIA. An especially large thank you in advance for everyone’s help whether distributing the appeal cards, giving the appeal, collecting in the cards or as one of the appeal supporters.

Leading up to Rosh Hashanah many of us visited the grounds and may have seen that the stones of ourloved ones required a clean. One of the services the Burial Society provides that people may not be aware of is its Care Programme. This programme ensures that the memorial stones of loved ones are well cared for with regular inspections and twice yearly cleaning. The standard care programme costs from £59.40 a year for a single stone and £86.40 for a double stone. For more information call 020 8950 7767 or email cemmang@usburial.org.uk.

May I take this opportunity of wishing you all well over the upcoming fast.

Shavuot 5769/2009

I’d like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and offers of support on my appointment as shul
chairman.

Leonie joins me in thanking the community for the beautiful ‘yadayim’ cup that was presented
to me on the occasion of my recent retirement as warden, having served for fifteen years.
Have a look at this web link to read the last blog: http://www.barnetsynagogue.org.uk/blog.html

Here’s an update on what’s going on in the shul:

Rabbi Lerer, Naomi and the boys will not be with us for Shavuot as they are in Israel for two
family celebrations. Our scholar in Residence for this chag will be Rabbi Jeremy Bruce who
will be in Barnet with his wife, Jo, and their family.

Eran Wieder, our youth director since September 2006, has given notice that he’s leaving us at
the end of the summer. So, with the help of Tribe, we have begun the process of finding a
replacement for him. I’ll keep you updated on what progress we’re making.

The new board of management held its first meeting and everyone is now getting on with the
job of running the shul (that’s what politicians say isn’t it?)

Lastly for now – there are some remedial building works going on at the back of the shul. This
may impact on our use of the building over the coming month. I apologise if anyone is
inconvenienced.
